Large umbrellas
Large umbrellas are defined as models with a canopy diameter of 110 cm or more. Standard umbrellas typically range from 90 to 105 cm and therefore essentially provide cover for one person without luggage. From 110 cm onwards, the ratio of body to umbrella surface area changes significantly: the head, shoulders, backpack and clothing are completely within the protected area, even in crosswinds and driving rain.
The size categories can be classified as follows:
Large: from 110 cm
XL: approx. 120 cm
XXL: approx. 130 to 140 cm
XXXL: from 150 cm
With each size category, not only does the surface area increase, but so do the demands placed on the frame, ribs and cover – large umbrellas are therefore constructed differently to simply enlarged standard umbrellas.
Large umbrellas for several people
The key advantage of large umbrellas lies in the usable area per person. From around 120 cm, two adults can stand side by side without their shoulders or bags protruding from the rain – including hand luggage, a briefcase or shopping. At 110 cm, one person remains completely dry even with larger luggage.
As a guide based on the number of people:
1 person with luggage: from 110 cm
2 people: 120 to 140 cm
3 people or more: from 150 cm (XXXL)
For situations where the number of people varies – entrance areas, pick-up points, outdoor appointments – the next larger size is recommended, as the edges of an umbrella offer less protection than the centre.
Large-sized umbrella types
Large diameters are found in several umbrella types, which differ in handle, length and intended use:
Golf umbrellas: For reception and waiting areas, usually provided in an umbrella stand and designed for spontaneous use by several guests – for example, the AC golf umbrella.
Doorman umbrellas: The largest model with a particularly long shaft for use by vehicles, at entrances or at events – for example, the 3XL fibreglass golf/guest umbrella FARE® Doorman.
